Kuka olet ja mistä tulet?

Erkko Virtanen, 28v lähihoitaja Hyvinkäältä. Aloitin sairaanhoitaja-diakonissan opinnot syksyllä 2012 Diakin Helsingin yksikössä.

Mitä muuta kuin koulua ja opkua?

Järjestötoiminta ja vaikuttaminen yleisesti ottaen kiinnostaa minua ja siihen tuleekin käytettyä aika lailla aikaa. Kuulun Kristillisdemokraattisten Nuorten hallitukseen ja olen Uudenmaan KD Nuorten puheenjohtaja. Toimin myös mm. Mannerheimin Lastensuojeluliiton Hyvinkään yhdistyksen hallituksessa ja Lasten ja nuorten taidekeskuksen säätiön hallituksessa. Tämän lisäksi tykkään käydä mm. festareilla, bändikeikoilla, lenkillä, museoissa ja teatterissa. Harrastusten ja opiskelun ohella pitää välillä käydä töissäkin. Teen keikkaa lähihoitajana lähinnä vuodeosastoille, vanhainkoteihin ja psykiatrisen puolen yksiköihin. 

Miksi lähdit mukaan?

Haluan vaikuttaa opiskelijoiden asioiden hyväksi. AMK-uudistus ja Diakin oma organisaatiouudistus ovat asioita, jotka haluan nähdä toteutuvan eturivistä, kenties myös jollain lailla olla vaikuttamassa ainakin oman koulumme kehitykseen. Haluan tuoda opiskelijoiden näkökulman mukaan näihin uudistuksiin ja muutoksiin. Nämä ovat haastavia aikoja, mutta minä pidän haasteista. Tunsin myös joitain vanhempia toimijoita ja O’Diakossa onkin mukana ihan huippuporukkaa!

Mitä tavoitteita kaudelle? 

Lisätään yhteistyötä SAMOKin, yritysten, muiden opiskelijakuntien ja kolmannen sektorin toimijoiden kanssa. Ollaan mukana valmistelemassa Diak Etelän yksiköiden muuttoa Kalasatamaan. Pidetään huolta, että opiskelijoiden ääntä kuullaan tässäkin prosessissa. Tiedotetaan meidän toiminnasta entistä enemmän, ollaan vahvempia opiskelijapolitiikan tekemisen ja näkymisen suhteen. Ollaan opiskelijalle helpommin lähestyttävissä, pidetään huolta siitä että opiskelijat tietää kehen ottaa yhteyttä kun on huolia, murheita tai haastavia tilanteita. Opiskelijakunnan tärkein tehtävä kun on huolehtia opiskelijoiden edunvalvonnasta. Meillä on tarkoitus järjestää loppuvuonna myös O’Diakon 15-vuotisjuhlat.

Who are you and where do you come from?

My name is Erkko Virtanen, I’m 28y practical nurse from Hyvinkää. I started my nurse-deaconess studies in autumn 2012 at Helsinki.

What else besides school and Student Union activity?

I like to make things happen and have my mark on them. Associations work is a thing of interest for me and I use quite a bit of time in doing that. I am a member in the board of the Christian Democratic Youth of Finland and the President of the Christian Democratic Youth of Uusimaa. I’m also a member of the Board for Mannerheim League for Child Welfare in Hyvinkää and The Art Centre for Children and Young People etc. My hobbies besides the associations work include for example visiting music festivals, band gigs, museums, theatre. As a student I also have to work to get by. I work as a practical nurse in hospital, nursing homes and psychiatric units. 

Why did you want to be an O’Diako active?

I want to work for the Student’s rights. The changes being made in the UAS field and in our own school Diak are things I want to see from the front line and maybe even make some impact on those changes, at least regarding our own school. I want to make sure that the voice of the students is heard in this process. These are challenging times, but I myself like challenges, they inspire me. I also knew some of the older actives and in O’Diako we do have some great people!

What are your goals for this year?

We will do more co-operation with SAMOK, other student unions, corporations and associations of the third sector. Let’s be onboard and make an impact on the moving of the Diak South to Helsinki. Let’s make sure that the student’s voice is heard on that matter. Let’s be more active in letting people know what we are doing, let’s be stronger regarding the student politics in general.  Let’s make it easy to contact us, let’s make sure the student knows who to approach or ask advice when troubled or facing challenges. The most important task of the Student Union is taking care of Student Welfare. We are also thinking about organizing the 15th anniversary party of O’Diako in the end of the year. 

What would you like to say to the students?

Be brave and join in our events, contact us, let us know about your own ideas in how to improve the situation of the students in our school. Ask around and get to know your rights as a student!
